Matthew Cuthbertson

(or Coverson)

1859 - 1908

Descendants

At birth, Matthew was registered with the surname Cuthbertson. However, on reaching adulthood his surname, and that of his children, was variously recorded as Coveson, Covison and Coverson. By 1908 the spelling used by the family was settled as Coverson.

We believe that we now have details of all of his descendants to the present day but no photograph or biographic details of him. Photographs or documents relating to him, or his immediate offspring would be welcome.

This is under investigation.

Lewis Cuthbertson

1837 - 1893

Descendants

Lewis Cuthbertson, born in Birmingham, but moved to Sheffield in the 1860s. It is clear that connections with Aston were retained because one of his daughters married in Aston and his wife died there too.

This is under investigation.

Henry Coverson

1839 - Not known

Descendants

Henry Coverson and his wife Selina (according to the 1901 Census) both lived in Aston, Birmingham. Henry could be the son of Matthew Cuthbertson (1811) above. There is a puzzle, however, because according to the 1891 Census Selina was married to a Richard Coverson.

This is under investigation.

There is also evidence that, at least in the 20th century, there was a Coverson family in the Windsor area including a Wilfred Cyril E. Coverson (1916-1997). The name has also been hyphenated, at some point, to Coverson-Biles. We have no details at present.

William Langston (1816)   and  John Shorter (1806)

Our research  is at any early stage and we would welcome any information that you may have. There are also Coversons in the USA and we would be interested to know when, and in what circumstances, the name migrated. It is possible that the USA Coversons derived from a 17th Century Dutch immigrant named Jan Covert.

Notes:

1.   During the nineteenth century the surnames Cuthbertson, Coverson, Coveson, Covison and even Coreson seem to be interchangeable.
